Care Guide for the Pearl Gourami:
Tank Setup:
- Tank Size: Provide a tank of at least 20 gallons for a pair or small group of Pearl Gouramis.
- Aquascape: Use live plants such as Java ferns, Anubias, and floating plants to provide cover and replicate their natural habitat. Driftwood and rocks can also be added for hiding spots.
- Substrate: Use fine gravel or sand substrate, as Pearl Gouramis like to sift through the substrate in search of food.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: Keep the water temperature between 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).
- pH: Maintain a slightly acidic to neutral pH level between 6.5 to 7.5.
- Water Hardness: Keep the water moderately hard, with a dGH range of 5-15.
- Filtration: Provide gentle filtration as Pearl Gouramis prefer slow-moving water. Consider adding a sponge filter or adjusting the flow of your filter to create a gentle current.
Feeding:
- Diet: Offer a varied diet, including high-quality flake or pellet food supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They also enjoy nibbling on algae and plant matter.
- Feeding Frequency: Feed small amounts twice a day, only what they can consume within a few minutes.
Behavior and Compatibility:
- Peaceful Nature: Pearl Gouramis are peaceful fish and can be kept in community tanks with other peaceful species of similar size.
- Tankmates: Good tankmates include other peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, gouramis, and peaceful barbs. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
- Social Behavior: Pearl Gouramis are social and can be kept as a single pair or in a small group.
Maintenance:
- Water Changes: Perform regular water changes of 25-30% weekly to maintain water quality and keep nitrate levels low.
- Tank Cleaning: Clean the substrate during water changes to remove debris and waste.
- Monitoring: Keep an eye on water parameters regularly using a test kit to ensure they remain within the acceptable range.
Breeding:
- Breeding Setup: Provide floating plants and a well-planted tank with subdued lighting to encourage spawning behavior.
- Spawning Behavior: Pearl Gouramis build bubble nests at the water's surface, where the male will entice the female to lay eggs.
- Fry Care: Once eggs are laid, remove the adults as they may eat the eggs. The fry will hatch in 24-48 hours and can be fed infusoria or commercially available fry food until they are large enough to accept crushed flake food.
By following these care guidelines, you can create a suitable environment for your Pearl Gouramis and enjoy their beauty and peaceful nature in your aquarium.
